Case Study: Setting up Lightbulb Workshops

We were in the planning stages of a new initiative focused on team building using creative idea generation techniques.  The tagline ‘creative team building’ was a straightforward yet effective word combination describing what we do, but finding a name that we both felt accurately represented our new venture needed careful consideration. We set aside a two-hour time slot to conduct our own name generation workshop via Skype with Jacqueline in Switzerland and Mary in the UK. Starting with Brainwriting and Brainmapping we captured our top-of-mind ideas and then moved on to use the A-Z technique. Working together using a webcam to communicate, we generated one word for each letter of the alphabet which related in some way to our core business. We then used the Random technique and chose a word from our list to kick-off with.  ‘I’ was for Inspiration and this led us to think about the famous quote ‘Genius is one per cent inspiration, ninety-nine per cent perspiration’ by Thomas Edison, and of course he was famously the inventor of the lightbulb. This word is associated in many cultures with ideas, creativity, inspiration and shedding light on issues and it lent itself very well to an easily identifiable logo. The name Lightbulb Workshops was derived using the ‘W is for Workshops’ from the A-Z list.
